How to keep a polo shirt looking fresh is one of the most frequently asked questions in golf shops. As those washing icons on shirt labels are difficult to decipher, here's some advice worth sharing.

To wash a polo

• Completely button the shirt's placquet and collar and turn the shirt inside out.
• Wash alone, or with like colors, in cold water.
• Either lay flat, or hang on a padded hanger, to dry.
• Once shirt is completely dry, put in dryer on low heat for five minutes to fluff out wrinkles.
• Turn shirt right-side out, lay flat on table and smooth out wrinkles on shirt and collar.
• Hang on wooden hanger in closet

  Some other “clean” thoughts

  • Do NOT dry clean mercerized golf shirts. The process weakens the shirt's fibers, does not really clean out sweat and dirt and can make a shirt appear dull.
  • The more polyester and nylon a shirt contains, the more wash-and-wear it is.
